The House Of Spirits Thesis

In the novel, The House Of Spirits, Isabel Allende blames the instability of Chile, on the countries major political events. In the novel The House of Spirits, many negative impacts can easily be found, many of them being a direct result of a political event. In the social aspect of Chilean life events such as rebellions against the government and a further division between the classes occurred in the novel. Politically murders and assassinations occur for the first time in Chilean History. A Military Coup occurs disrupting Chilean life disastrously and finally, Chile suffered economically through sabotage and from major food shortages.

Social events in a culture are some of the most fundamental and crucial. in The House of Spirits, when the university students from Alba’s school become unhappy with the current political party in charge of the country and become involved in a protest. “Alba sat at the university along with the students who had seized a building in support of a strike by workers.” (Allende 319) When the government would not meet the workers demands, citizens grouped together and protested. Sebastian Gomez believed that if other joined in the protest, it could be the downfall of the government, however Miguel realized the realistic outcome was for the government to sign the workers’ list of demands. The protest, which Alba is involved in, is one of the first incidents in the book caused by the political events and it is naturally a simple protest on a social level.
